NUANCE: Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center

Exploring New FIB-SEM Workflows with Thermo Fisher Scientific

On August 18, NUANCE welcomed around 20 students, researchers, and industry professionals for a workshop with Thermo Fisher Scientific focused on new approaches to 2D and 3D FIB-SEM workflows. The event was supported by the Northwestern University Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC).

The workshop featured presentations from Thermo Fisher experts Ken Wu and Vivek Subramanian, covering 3D FIB-SEM workflows for both materials and life science applications. Participants also learned about the Spin Mill Method, a new approach that uses a specialized holder and software to mill, polish, and clean sample surfaces with nanometer-scale precision.

The afternoon featured a live Spin Mill demonstration, followed by two days of one-on-one sessions where participants could bring their own materials and work directly with Thermo Fisher experts. These hands-on sessions gave researchers a chance to explore how the technology could be applied to their own projects and workflows.

It was a great opportunity for the NUANCE community to connect with Thermo Fisher specialists, learn about emerging FIB-SEM techniques, and get hands-on experience with new tools for advanced imaging and characterization.
