NUANCE: Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center

NUANCE Hosts 2026 M3S Spring Meeting

On March 27, 2026, the NUANCE Center at Northwestern University hosted the annual Spring Meeting of the Midwest Microscopy and Microanalysis Society, bringing together 85 attendees from academia, national labs, and industry.

The day featured two keynote talks highlighting exciting developments in microscopy. Stephen House of Sandia National Laboratories presented “Tour de Fracture: High-Cycle Fatigue in the TEM,” while Feng Wang shared insights on advanced battery materials in “iPE4Pilot: Integrated Process Engineering for Pilot-Ready Cathode Production.” You can view the event schedule and all speakers and talk titles here.

In addition to the technical program, attendees connected with more than 10 vendors throughout the day, exploring the latest tools and technologies during breaks and lunch.

The meeting also included the M3S business session, where new leadership was announced. Tera Lavoie was introduced as the incoming President, succeeding Fengyuan Shi.

Overall, the event offered a great mix of scientific exchange, community building, and industry engagement—highlighting the continued strength of the Midwest microscopy community.
