NUANCE: Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center

Magnifying Minds 2025!

"I had a blast yesterday!  Both sessions seemed really engaged and hearing the kids cheer for me really made my week." - Eric Roth

Eric Roth, NUANCE’s BioCryo Core Scientist, was excited to visit Chicago’s Boys & Girls Club Pedersen-McCormick location on July 22, 2025 for Science and Society’s ‘Magnifying Minds’ event for the second year in a row. Eric presented a kid friendly introduction to NANO and SEM and was on hand to answer questions about microscopes and the many ways microscopy assists scientific research.

Not only did the participants learn about life at the nano-scale, but all the different fields of research that use microscopes including forensics, geology, medicine, and more. They had wonderful questions for Eric about what it’s like to be a scientist, diverse types of microscopes, and particularly enjoyed trying to identify what the various SEM samples were! Eric shared: I had a blast yesterday!  Both sessions seemed really engaged and hearing the kids cheer for me really made my week.

Thank you so much to Science and Society for hosting this event and thank you to the amazing staff and volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club of Chicago!
