Karl Hagglund visits Oxford Instruments

SEM Facility Manager Karl Hagglund visited Oxford Instruments in Concord, Massachusetts, last week for training on Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD).

EBSD is an imaging technique used to look at the microstructure of materials in a scanning electron microscope. In EBSD, a stationary electron beam scans a tilted crystalline sample. A fluorescent screen detects the pattern formed by the electrons that diffract off of the material.

It's important to understand a material's microstructure or internal features because they influence the material's properties or behavior. The technique and the results it yields are useful to a variety of fields, including the automotive, aerospace, nuclear and Earth science industries.
