Karl Hagglund Hosts first Coffee Hour of the Year

On Wednesday, January 18, the first NUANCE Coffee Hour of 2017 was held in the Cook Hall Atrium. This monthly event offers NUANCE users the opportunity to get to know each other in an informal setting and learn more about the NUANCE center and its staff.

This month’s host was Karl Hagglund, SEM manager at NUANCE’s EPIC Facility. Karl delivered an engaging talk on his career trajectory resulting in his current position, with quite a few surprising twists: who knew that before working in microscopy Karl used to be an archaeologist, or that he brews his own award-winning beer!

The convoluted path towards becoming a TEM facility manager

Karl ended up at NUANCE through quite an ususual path: he started his career as an archaeologist, working for the U.S. Department of the Interior (Bureau of Indian Affairs), the Institute for Minnesota Archaeology, and the Leech Lake Reservation Tribal Council.

Karl highlighted the opportunities that enabled him to make a career switch to microscopy, offering the attendees an insight into the many possibilities open to young scientists.

Many attendees stuck around for a chat, and to enjoy the assortment of chips, dip, and cookies.
