Leica UC7/FC7 Cryo-Ultramicrotome

Our new Leica UC7/FC7 Cryo-Ultramicrotome has been installed in Silverman Hall, room 0B545. This instrument is part of an EPIC/QBIC initiative to enhance Cryo EM capabilities at Northwestern University.

This state of the art Cryo-Ultramicrotome enables users to section at liquid nitrogen temperatures through cryo-fixed and vitreous frozen samples for imaging with Cryo EM and for elemental microanalysis. Cryo sample preparation retains samples as close to the true-to-life state as possible, whereas conventional sample processing can lead to artifacts and to the redistribution of elements.

The device is also suitable for sectioning samples at ambient temperature. The thickness of sections can be adjusted from a few nanometers up to several micrometers.
