Cryo-Ultramicrotome to be Installed in EPIC

EPIC, with support from the Chemistry of Life Processes Institute (CLP) and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center (RHLCCC), purchased a Leica UC7 Ultramicrotome with a FC7 Cryo Attachment.

This state of the art Cryo-Ultramicrotome enables users to section at liquid nitrogen temperatures through cryo fixed and vitreous frozen samples for imaging with TEM and STEM, and for elemental microanalysis. Cryo sample preparation offers the most true-to-life ultrastructure in biological/soft samples possible in comparison to chemical processing that can result in artifacts.

The device is also suitable for sectioning of samples at ambient temperature. The thickness of sections can be adjusted from a few nanometers up to several micrometers. The device will be delivered and installed in EPIC in January 2012.
