NUANCE Center (Atomic -
and Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center)
integrates three existing complementary instrumentation
facilities at NU: EPIC,
NIFTI, and Keck-II
- under a unified management umbrella, and consolidated
into contiguous space.
These three facilities are a unique,
centralized, and integrated resource for the NU
community and beyond. NUANCE still retains
the individual identity of the three facilities
but their integration into contiguous space, and
the unified management and operations permits
synergy among instruments, techniques, training,
service, technical staff and their expertise.
EPIC
(Electron Probe Instrumentation Center) has an
array of scanning and transmission electron microscopes
(SEM and TEM) as well as a comprehensive specimen
preparation facility.
NIFTI
(Nanoscale Integrated Fabrication, Testing, and
Instrumentation) user facility houses scanning
probe and related lithography instrumentation
for patterning, fabrication and localized measurements.
Keck-II
(Keck Interdiscplinary Surface Science Center)
has state-of-the-art surface science - and related
instrumentation, including XPS, ToF SIMS, Confocal Raman, and FT-IR.
NUANCE facilities are integrated
with the core philosophy of complete, hands-on
and 24/7 open-access facility, with proper checks
and balances, for training, education and self-policing
by our users. They are open to all faculty, staff
and students at Northwestern University as well
as outside researchers, including industrial companies
and partners. Several periodic and well-developed
hands-on training schemes are available for accessing
these unique facilities by contacting the technical
staff associated with the facilities.
I hope you will visit NUANCE
center and see how best it can serve your needs.
NUANCE staff and I will be happy to answer
your queries and help you get the best out of
our instrumentation and capabilities.
I look forward to seeing you at
NUANCE soon.
